Local farm markets offer protection for rising food costs

While food prices are expected to increase as much as 5 percent in the next five months due to drought conditions nationwide, the situation in New Jersey may be far brighter.

New Jersey’s farmers are experiencing higher-than-normal yields this year due to improved weather conditions, according to NJBiz.com. The reduced supply of produce such as corn, grown in abundance in New Jersey, will result in higher prices and higher profits for the state’s farmers.

Local consumers, meanwhile, can continue to purchase local produce at the various competitive farm markets in the region, including:

• Collingswood Farmers’ Market: 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays under the PATCO station
• Haddonfield Farmers’ Market: 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays in Kings Court on Kings Highway
• Haddon Heights Farmers’ Market: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays at Station and Atlantic Avenues
• Westmont Farmers’ Market: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at Haddon and Stratford Avenues
• Springdale Farms: 7 days each week on Springdale Road in Cherry Hill.
